A short word on the Prophet (PBUH).

When you separate out his life from the myths that have attached themselves to him and the false charges of his enemies (his first and worst enemies were the Jews) this is what you find.

Muhammad (PBUH) was a diligent pious young man who was very much inspired to seek God and his ways. The Hanefites and Christians were friends and guiding influences in his life. He did not seek to be a prophet. At the beginning when he was inspired to speak about revelations to him of God he spoke to his first wife Khadijah before anyone else, and it was her uncle Waraca, a Hanefite who had become a Christian, who verified that Muhammad's (peace be upon them) visions were genuine and that he was a prophet to the Arab people.

It is Muhammad's (PBUH) revelation, the Holy Qur'an, from God, Allah (SWT) - and also his life, shorn of myths and slanders, that speak truly.

It is absolutely clear in this perspective that he did not ever consider himself a source of a new religion. Islam, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was given to understand from God was the revelation given the Prophets from the very first Prophet, Adam, on – and utterly includes that only Jesus Christ is the Word and the Messiah of God, peace be upon them.

The Apocalypse is a revelation of things that were, are and will be. We are actually witnessing some of the events foretold in this book, but many still lie in the future. It is Christ who commands John to write to the seven churches, opens the seven seals, reveals the sufferings of the saints, opens the little book, overcomes the beast, reigns during the period of the first resurrection, judges the dead, both great and small, according to their works at His Second Coming, rules over all things from the beginning, presides over all the changing scenes of earth’s history, and is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

The book presents Christ as the Coming One; it reveals the dealings of Him who came, and who is to come. It opens with the solemn hope that the Coming One will come soon, and closes with the impressive prediction that the Coming One will come quickly.

The book is one of hope, but also one of warning; its aim is to assure the Church of the advent of her Lord in victory. The precise time of this victory lies hidden with God, but it is certain, although the crown will not be won without a struggle. Heaven will be stormed and carried away through suffering and conflict. And all who keep the words of this book will take part in the conflict and share in the victory.The conflict is presented under the form of symbols. It is not easy to give a full interpretation of all the types, but the general symbols are not difficult to understand. Jerusalem stands as the type of the good cause, and this is the Church of Christ.Babylon appears as the type of the evil cause, and this is the world power. The heavenly Jerusalem has the assistance of divine power. The earthly Babylon has the help of evil powers, the dragon, the beast and the false prophet. The scenes in the great conflict arrange themselves around these types of good and of evil. The numbers, the seals, the trumpets and the bowls are phases in the development and consummation of the conflict.

John has arranged the scenes in a sevenfold structure; even in the subordinate visions he keeps to this arrangement. Commentators, however, are not agreed in marking off the limits of each structure.

The book was written in Greek by St. John the Evangelist, on the island of Patmos, about the year. 96 A.D.

Note on parallel passages and commentary. The parallel passages are based on the full concordance thereof relating to, from the Council of Trent; the commentary is late 1940’s Catholic from the full consensus of the Church Fathers on the seven within seven structure of the book.

Also note that the book at the same time “opens from the middle” so to speak. Just like a megilloth (Hebrew for scroll). The first eleven chapters (1 – 11) which culminate in the general judgement – Rev. 11:18 – 19
And the nations were angry: and thy wrath is come. And the time of the dead, that they should be judged and that thou shouldest render reward to thy servants the prophets and the saints, and to them that fear thy name, little and great: and shouldest destroy them who have corrupted the earth.
And the temple of God was opened in heaven: and the ark of his testament was seen in his temple. And there were lightnings and voices and an earthquake and great hail. (DRV)
And the second eleven chapters (12 – 22) which culminate in the general judgement (Rev. 20:11 – 14) and the New Heaven and New Earth (Rev. 21, 22)

Both the first and second eleven chapters begin from the time of Christ’s Incarnation but include the fact that He is Immortal and the Creator of Heaven and Earth. See: Rev. 1:4 – 6 John to the seven churches which are in Asia. Grace be unto you and peace, from him that is and that was and that is to come: and from the seven spirits which are before his throne:
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth, who hath loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood (when He became Incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the blessed virgin Mary and went to the Cross for our salvation)
And hath made us a kingdom, and priests to God and his Father. To him be glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen.(DRV)

And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. And being with child, she cried travailing in birth: and was in pain to be delivered.

These two phrases that is and that was and that is to come (Greek “‘o oon kai ‘o en kai ‘o erchoumenos”) and I am Alpha and Omega (Greek: “egoo eimi to Alpha kai to Omega”) are emphatic declarations of Christ’s Divinity and Immortality for it is the Thrice Holy Trinity – Rv:4:8 And the four living creatures had each of them six wings: and round about and within they are full of eyes. And they rested not day and night, saying: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come. (Greek “‘agious ‘agious ‘agious kurios ‘o theos ‘o pantocrator”) – alone Who possesses Aseity (self existence and Who is therefore alone uncreated) and Who is Immortal of the same Essence/Substance – Nature.
In the above: the “who [that] is”, in Greek “‘o oon”, is the declaration of Aseity. The “who [that] was” and the “who [that] is to come” with the “‘o oon”, self existence, is the declaration of Immortality (having no beginning and no end – always existing). The phrase I am Alpha and Omega has exactly the same meaning. “I am” – “egoo eimi” is the equivalent of Yahweh (God’s proper name) in Hebrew meaning “I am” in the same sense as the above “‘o oon”. Alpha and Omega has the same meaning as Immortality in the above. Pantocrator (translated as Almighty) is the declaration of the Thrice Holy Lord God’s All ruling absolute Sovereignty and includes emphatically the meaning that He is alone uncreated and Creator, ex nihilo, of all of creation. This relates directly to the beginning of the Gospel of St. John and the beginning of the first book of the Torah (the Pentateuch) which is Genesis. See: Genesis 1:1 through 2:4 andSt. John’s Gospel 1:1 through vs. 18. All of this and the exact seventy human generations recounted in St. Luke’s Gospel 3:1 – 38 from Adam to Christ (see also the parallel in St. Matthew’s Gospel 1:1 – 25 from Abraham to Christ) and the testimony of the Church Fathers does not allow any pagan evolutionary gods nor even sophist pantheistic idolatrous creationism but only creation by the Creator as He said He did it, and only Redemption in God and His Christ (the Messiah, al-Maseeh) as He said that it is; the false gods or pagan idolatrous religions that willfully reject God and Jesus Christ (those who do not willfully reject Him but seek God in their hearts are judged by God alone) are without grace and they and their followers will be damned forever, who do not repent in this life from those false gods and religions and come to God and His Christ and make confession in Him and be baptized by God’s Spirit {believers in monotheistic Islam and all men of good will (in the full consensus of the Church Fathers) are included as true believers in the true God and therefore saved by their confession of belief in and fulfilling the will of God, Allah (SWT)}. Allah is from biblical Hebrew 'Eloah' and means the true God, All middle Eastern Christians, including Catholics, who are Arabic speakers call on Allah as the name of the true God. Amen.

The below is an opinion based on the non-mandatory haditha in Islam. For instance the mystery of iniquity in St. Paul's writings refer to Satan just as the tree of knowledge of good and evil does in the Book of Genesis. The Antichrist will of course come of Satan and serve only Satan. According to St. Irenaeus the Antichrist is the recapitulation of all evil summed up in one man. That is in complete concord and agreement with the full consensus of the Church Fathers and the teachings of scripture. Whether or not he is hiding in Jerusalem now or has been or will be born of a harlot by the Devil or possessed later as Judas Iscariot was, or is a being created by God long ago (such as a demon - which some of the Fathers thought would be the being that would incarnate as a man at some point in time) and concealed to be revealed as a man when God allows it, are all details to be revealed in their own time.

I have been reading a very interesting book called " Jerosalem In The Qur'an" By Imran N. Hosein. The book displays very interesting, though strange, interpretations of Dajjal and Gog and Magoog. I do need your opininons on this very interesting and strange interpretation.

I have pasted a chapter about Dajjal and I have attached the whole book for those who would like to read it and I am sure you will find it very interesting.



WHO IS DAJJAL?

The greatest dream of the Jews for more than 2000 years has been the dream of
returning to the Holy Land as rulers over the land so that they might restore the State
of Israel established by the Prophet-Kings, David (‘alaihi al-Salaam) and Solomon (‘alaihi
al-Salaam), rebuild the Temple that was built by Solomon (‘alaihi al-Salaam) in Jerusalem,
and worship the God of Abraham in that Temple. That must be considered to be a very
noble dream indeed. A people who dream such a dream as the greatest of all their
dreams must be a people who would achieve spiritual greatness. They should be a
people who would prefer the ‘hereafter’ to the ‘dunya’ (world), and whose spiritual
insight would penetrate ‘external’ appearances to recognize the ‘reality’ of things. At a
very minimum, therefore, they should be able to realize that such a noble dream cannot
possibly be fulfilled through the creation of an essentially godless State of Israel, and
through a reign of terror and oppression in the Holy Land that has now lasted for more
than 50 bloodstained years. It is unlikely that the oppression can continue for another
50 years before they face the horrible consequences.
Now the Israelite-Jews all believed that their greatest dream could not and would
not be fulfilled until that special Prophet called the Messiah would appear. He would
“bring salvation at the end of the ages, when he would be enthroned as king of the
world”. This reign of the Messiah is repeated elsewhere in the scriptures. (I Enoch:
45:3; 105:2; 28:29; 13:32–35; 14:9). Of course European Jews who established the
Zionist Movement hardly share that sacred attachment to prophecies pertaining to the
Messiah.
Allah Most High ordained that the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal) would deliver
to the Jews by deception that which they would embrace as the fulfillment of their
greatest dream, i.e., return to their Holy Land, restoration of the State of Israel, the
appointment of a king to rule over them: (Appoint for us a king that we may fight in the
cause of Allah – Qur’an, al-Baqarah, 2:246) and the reconstruction of the Temple.
The fact that they have been so utterly and completely deceived by the Impostor State
of Israel is indicative of their continuing spiritual blindness:
“But the deeds of those who disbelieve (in this Qur’an and this last Prophet – among
other things) are like a mirage in sandy deserts which the man parched with thirst
mistakes for water until when he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing: but he finds
Allah (present there) with him, and Allah will pay him his account: and Allah is swift
in taking account.”
(Qur’an, al-Nur, 24:39)
The State of Israel is today in precisely that situation of the man who is parched for
thirst and mistakes a mirage for water.
“Verily this Qur’an explains to the Israelites most of the matters in which they
disagree. And it certainly is a Guide and a Mercy to those who believe.”
(Qur’an, al-Naml, 27:76-7)
The ‘appearance’ today is that the ‘greatest dream’ is almost completely fulfilled.
The Israelite Jews have returned to the Holy Land, or are free to do so, from wherever
in the world they may be. The State of Israel was created in 1948 and is now a reality.

All that remains for the dream to be completed is the appointment of a king and the
destruction of Masjid al-Aqsa to permit the reconstruction of the Temple:
“When you come unto the land which God your Lord gives you, and shall possess it, and shall
dwell therein, and shall say: ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are round about
me,’ you shall then appoint the king that God your Lord shall choose (implied is the belief that
he will be from the House of David).”
(Deuteronomy , 17:14-15)
In addition Israel must become the Ruling State in the world and the King of Israel
must rule the world from Jerusalem.
The compelling implication is that all of this could not have been achieved without
the Messiah. This is the ‘appearance’. What is the ‘reality’?
The ‘reality’ of all of this, when viewed from Islam, is that Dajjal, the False
Messiah, has deceived the Jews into believing that divine grace has brought them this
close to the complete fulfillment of their greatest dream. The ‘reality’ is that their
spiritual blindness has led them into a divine trap from which there is now no escape.
They denounce oppression and injustice in the world but justify their own oppression
and injustice to others. They do so on the grounds that they have a special status with
the Divine Being that others do not have. Since they believe that the Holy Land
belongs to them, they also believe that they have the right to liberate it from those who
lived on it for hundreds of years. The ‘end’ justifies the ‘means’. The ‘reality’ is that
they have been misled and misguided and thoroughly deceived by Dajjal.
Dajjal, the False Messiah, is a being created by Allah Most High, who would
impersonate the Messiah and deceive the Jews into believing that he is the true
Messiah. Dajjal was endowed by Allah, Most Wise, with awesome power, versatility
and with great capacity for deception and guile. The Christians know him as the Anti-
Christ. Dajjal, the evil being created by Allah Most High will one day appear in the
world as a human being. When he does so, he would be a Jew and, in addition, he
would be a young man who would be powerfully built with curly hair. Prophet
Muhammad (‘alaihi al-Salaam) suspected a Jewish youth, Ibn Sayyad, who was resident
in Madina, to have been the Dajjal. In doing so he confirmed that Dajjal had already
been released into the world and would one day appear as:
Ø a human being,
Ø a Jew,
Ø a young man.
The True Messiah, like Solomon (‘alaihi al-Salaam), would rule the world from the
throne of David (‘alaihi al-Salaam) i.e., Jerusalem. In order for him to do so it would be
necessary for him to first accomplish the following:

Ø liberate the Holy Land of the rule of those who do not worship the God of
Abraham,
Ø bring the ‘chosen people’ (who, at the time of the announcement of the divine
promise were Jews) back to the Holy Land,
Ø restore the State of Israel established by David (‘alaihi al-Salaam) and Solomon
(‘alaihi al-Salaam),
Ø cause Israel to become the ‘Ruling State’ in the world.
Only then would it be possible for the True Messiah to rule the world from the
throne of David (‘alaihi al-Salaam), i.e., from Jerusalem.
If Dajjal, the False Messiah, were to successfully impersonate the true Messiah it
follows from the above that he, also, would have to do all of the above.
The question may arise in consequence of the statement made above: If Dajjal, the
False Messiah, or Anti-Christ, is responsible for this grand deception of the Jews, and
so much more, and if he is already released and already on earth, then where is he?
The Prophet spoke (in what may be recognized as the ‘mother of all puzzles’) and said
the following about Dajjal, the False Messiah:
“Narrated al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an: ….We said: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), how
long will he stay on Earth? He said: For forty days, one day like a year, one day like a month,
one day like a week, and the rest of the days will be like your days….”
(Sahih, Muslim; Sunan, Tirmidhi)
It will only be at the very end of his life on earth, therefore, that Dajjal’s day will be
like our day. Secondly, Dajjal, the False Messiah, will be in ‘our’ dimension of time
when ‘his day’ would be like ‘our day’. Hence he would be in ‘our’ world only at the
very end of his life when he enters into ‘our’ world in order to complete his mission of
impersonating the Messiah. The promise of Allah Most High was that the Messiah
would rule the world from the throne of David (‘alaihi al-Salaam), i.e. from a Jerusalem
that would be the heart of the State of Israel. And so it is clear that Dajjal will be
physically located in Jerusalem at the very end of his life on earth, and at that time,
since ‘his day would be like our day’, it would be possible for us to see him. At that
time we would see him as a Jew, a young man, powerfully built, with curly hair etc.
He would also have to be the Ruler of the world who would rule the world from
Jerusalem. Here is the answer to the question concerning the strategic role that
Jerusalem is destined to play in the end of history.
Prior to that he will be around us in much the same way that angels and Jinn are
always around us and yet they are not in ‘our’ world (in a day like our day) and hence
are not visible. He will constantly attack us to test our faith. He will be weaving his

web of deception, but we will not be able to observe him with our normal faculties of
observation since ‘his day’ will not be like ‘our day’. Where on earth will Dajjal be
when he is released by Allah on earth in a day which would be like a year, and then in
a day which would be like a month, and then finally in a day which would be like a
week? We know that he will be on earth, but where on earth?
Fortunately we have an answer to the first question, and that answer, in turn, opens
for us the possibility to find answers to the other two questions. The answer to the first
question is located in the Hadith that is known as the Hadith of Tamim al-Dari. Tamim
al-Dari was a Christian who embraced Islam in Madina. He came to the Prophet (‘alaihi
al-Salaam) and narrated to him something that he had experienced concerning Dajjal. It
is not clear whether he had a dream or a vision or an actual real-life experience. The
Prophet (‘alaihi al-Salaam) responded by asking the people to keep sitting after the prayer
in the Masjid so that he could narrate to them what Tamim had experienced
concerning Dajjal. He went on to declare that what Tamim al-Dari had narrated to him
confirmed what he, the Prophet (‘alaihi al-Salaam), had himself been saying concerning
Dajjal. Here is the Hadith:
“Narrated Fatimah bint Qays, sister of ad-Dahhak ibn Qays:
Amir ibn Sharahil ash-Sha'bi said: Fatimah bint Qays was among the first emigrant women. I
asked her to narrate to me a Hadith which she had heard directly from Allah's Apostle (peace
be upon him) and there was no extra link between them. She said: Very well, if you like, I am
prepared to do that. He said to her: Well, do so and narrate it to me. She said: … So I set out
towards the mosque and observed prayer with the Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and I
was in the row of the women which was near the row of men. When Allah’s Apostle (peace be
upon him) had finished his prayer, he sat on the pulpit, smiling, and said: Every worshipper
should remain sitting in his place. He then said: Do you know why I have asked you to
assemble? They said: Allah and His apostle know best. He said: By Allah, I have not made you
assemble for exhortation or for a warning. I have detained you here because Tamim Dari, a
Christian who came and accepted Islam, told me something which agrees with what I was
telling you about the Dajjal. He narrated to me that he had sailed in a ship with thirty men of
Banu Lakhm and Banu Judham and had been tossed by waves in the ocean for a month. Then
these (waves) took them (near) the land within the ocean (island) at the time of sunset. They sat
in a small rowing boat and landed on that island. There was a beast with long thick hair (and
because of this) they could not distinguish his face from his back. They said: Woe to you, who
can you be? Thereupon it said: I am al-Jassasah. They said: What is al-Jassasah? It said: O
people, go to this person in the monastery as he is very much eager to know about you. He (the
narrator) said: When it named a person for us we were afraid of it lest it should be a Devil.
Then we hurried on till we came to that monastery and found a well-built person there with his
hands tied to his neck and iron shackles gripping his legs by the ankle. We said: Woe to you,

fearing that that might be the Devil. He (that chained person) said: Tell me about the date-palm
trees of Baysan. We said: In which respect do you seek information about it? He said: I ask you
whether these trees bear fruit or not. We said: Yes. Thereupon he said: I think these will not
bear fruit. He said: Inform me about the lake of Tabariyyah? We said: What do you want to
know about it? He said: Is there water in it? They said: There is an abundance of water in it.
Thereupon he said: I think it will soon dry up. He again said: Inform me about the spring of
Zughar. They said: What do you want to know about it? He (the chained person) said: Is there
water in it and does it irrigate (the land)? We said to him: Yes, there is an abundance of water
in it and the inhabitants (of Medina) irrigate (land) with its help. He said: Inform me about the
unlettered Prophet; what has he done? We said: He has left Mecca and has settled in Yathrib
(Medina). He said: Do the Arabs fight against him? We said: Yes. He said: How does he deal
with them? We informed him that he had overcome those in his neighbourhood and they had
submitted themselves before him. Thereupon he said to us: Had it actually happened? We said:
Yes. Thereupon he said: If it is so, that is better for them that they show obedience to him. I am
going to tell you about myself. I am the Dajjal and will be soon permitted to leave. So I shall
leave and travel in the land, and shall not spare any town where I shall not land within forty
nights except Mecca and Tauba (i.e., Medina). These two (places) are prohibited (areas) for me
and I shall not attempt to enter either of them. An angel with a sword in his hand will confront
me and bar my way and there will be angels to guard every road leading to it. Then Allah's
apostle (peace be upon him) striking the pulpit with the help of the end of his staff said: This
implies Tayba meaning Medina. Have I not told you an account (of the Dajjal) like this? The
people said: Yes, and this account narrated by Tamim Dari was liked by me for it corroborates
the account which I gave to you in regard to him (Dajjal) at Medina and Mecca. Behold he
(Dajjal) is in the Syrian sea (Mediterranean) or the Yemen sea (Arabian sea). Nay, on the
contrary, he is in the east, he is in the east, he is in the east, and he pointed with his hand
towards the east. I (Fatimah bint Qays) said: I preserved it in my mind (this narration from
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him).

It is very clear from this Hadith that when Dajjal was released into the world he
would have to be geographically located on that island, and it would be from that
island that he would launch his effort to impersonate the Messiah by liberating the
Holy Land of non-Jewish rule etc. Which island was it?
THE ISLAND IS BRITAIN
Our view is that the island referred to in the Hadith was Britain. The evidence that
supports our claim is truly startling. Consider the following. In 1917 the government
of the ‘island’ of Britain issued the Balfour Declaration in which it announced to a
startled world the intention of the British Government to support the establishment of a

Jewish National Home in the Holy Land. Then in 1917-8 it was a British army led by
General Allenby which defeated the Turkish army and liberated the Holy Land of
Muslim rule. From 1919 to 1948 Britain ruled over the Holy Land on the basis of a
Mandate conferred by the League of Nations. During this period of time the world
witnessed the massive emigration of European Jews to the Holy Land. The tremendous
German hatred of the Jews for their betrayal in the first world war (the German Jews
made a deal with Britain that they would get USA to enter the war in support of
Britain if Britain, in turn, would promise to give them the Holy Land when the war
was won) and the resultant rise of Hitler led to such wholesale persecution of the Jews
as dramatically increased the Jewish emigration from Europe to the Holy Land.
Finally, in 1948 Britain acted as the ‘midwife’ for the baby to be born, i.e., for the
declaration of independence of the State of Israel. We may note, in addition, that the
island of Britain is located across the Mediterranean Sea about one month’s journey
from the Arab world! It is also important to note that the British have excelled in
spying and espionage. Sherlock Holmes and James Bond movies are the fictional
equivalent to Lawrence of Arabia .

Jesus Christ is the Word of God as both Islam and Christian faith proclaim. He was not made but existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit before all things that were created, made by God. This is His begotten of the Father before all ages (engendered of the same essence by the Father) but never begotten by man, that is by human generation.

In 605, while Nabopolassar, his father, still ruled, Nabuchodonosor won the battle of Charchemish over the Egyptians who were trying to invade Babylon, thrust them back to Egypt, and seized all their dependencies in Palestine. Coming to Jerusalem, he subjugated King Joakim and made Juda a tributary nation of Babylon. Upon the death of his father in 604, Nabuchodonosor returned to Babylon to secure the throne, taking with him the prophet Daniel and other young men of Juda who rose to high positions in the Babylonian court. When Jerusalem refuted to pay tribute three years later (c. 602), Nabuchodonosor sent roving tribes against the city (4 Kings 24:1-2). Mo’loch. A Chanaanite deity, corresponding to the Ammonite Melchom. Human sacrifices, especially children, were offered to it. Under pain of death, Israel was forbidden to make such sacrifices (Lev. 18:21), but did so in spite of the command (3 Kings 11:5; 2 Paral. 28:3; 33:6). Solomon built a temple for Moloch (3 Kings 11:7), and because of this, God said He would rend the kingdom out of the hands of Solomon’s posterity (3 Kings 11:31). [Solomon and his temple of Moloch are types of the Antichrist to come and the Antichrist's rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. The Diabolic Idols Moloch and Remphan were brought out of Egypt by the rebellious Israelites and through the Exodus and forty years in the desert to Palestine. St. Stephen in his discourse condemned Remphan and Moloch and the Israelite idolatry thereof. For this he was stoned to death by Saul's accomplices. Moloch sacrifice was performed in the Kiddron Valley - Gehenom - just outside the east gate of Jerusalem and is the false sacrifice in connection with the abomination of desolation in the temple in the book of Daniel 11 (originally Zeus Capitolinus); this is referred to by Christ in Matthew 24:15 and is the destruction of the legitimate sacrifice in Daniel 12 and will be performed to Satan in the rebuilt temple of the Antichrist in the future as it was in the Vatican on June 29, 1963.]

VER. 24. The scribes who charged that our Lord’s supernatural works were to be attributed to the devil were from Jerusalem, according to Mark 3:22.
VER. 28, The kingdom of God has come. The victory of Jesus over the demons indicated that He was the Messias. The king was already gathering His people.
VER. 32. The sin against the Holy Spirit is to ascribe to the devil the works of the Holy Spirit. One who thus attacks directly this source of all grace, rejects the source of salvation. It is morally impossible that he should ever meet the conditions for absolution.
VER. 36. An idle word is one which profits neither the speaker nor the hearer. If the word is merely useless, its utterance is not seriously wrong. But every deliberate human act has a moral value and will be rewarded or punished.

Temple. The center of the official worship of God for the Hebrews. It is important to remember that the Temple in Jerusalem was regarded primarily as God’s house, His dwelling place on earth, and only secondarily as a place of worship or assembly. The Temple in the Bible always refers to one of a succession of three structures erected on the same spot, Mount Moria, in the eastern part of Jerusalem. The site is now partially occupied by the so-called Mosque of Omar. Traditionally, Mount Moria was regarded as the place where Abraham went to sacrifice his son Isaac (Gen. 22).

Because of some references to a “temple” in Silo in the days of the Judges, presided over by the priest Heli (1 Kings 1:9; 3:3), it has been supposed that there was an actual permanent temple there before the building of the Temple by Solomon. But this is not certain. The “temple” at Silo may have been nothing more than the Tabernacle set up in some semi-permanent form. (See Tabernacle.)

What is certain is that the Bible makes mention of four Temples, one of them ideal or imaginary. The first of these is Solomon’s Temple, completed in about 968 B.C. Solomon’s father, David, did not actually begin construction, but he amassed great quantities of materials of all sorts for the building (1 Paral. 22:14-16; etc.). In the actual construction, which began in the fourth year of his reign, Solomon was greatly assisted by his father’s old friend and ally, Hiram, king of Tyre (3 Kings 5).

The Temple proper was identical in arrangement with the Tabernacle which it supplanted, but on a larger scale, the inside dimensions being exactly twice those of the Tabernacle (30 x 90 feet). Like the Tabernacle, the Temple proper was divided into two chambers, the inner chamber, the Holy of Holies, being a perfect cube 30 feet in each dimension. In the Holy of Holies was placed the Ark of the Covenant, over which were set two mammoth cherubim, 15 feet high, with outstretched wings that touched each other in the center of the room and the side walls on the left and right. These cherubim were made of olive wood overlaid with pure gold. In the outer larger chamber, separated from the Holy of Holies by a partition of cedar wood with a door of olive wood in the center, were furnishings like those of the Holy Place of the Tabernacle, but on a grander scale. There was but one altar of incense, made of cedar wood overlaid with gold, but there were ten tables for the loaves of proposition and ten golden candlesticks, or lampstands (2 Paral. 4:7-8, 19; etc.). This Temple proper was really only the inner core of the building, about 75 x 150 feet in size.

Around three sides was a series of smaller chambers used for storage of various articles connected with the Temple service and for other purposes (3 Kings 6:5 ff.). On the western end of the building was a porch 15 feet deep (3 Kings 6:3). The whole building was built of the finest materials available, such as marble, cedar wood, olive wood, cypress, and richly embroidered fabrics of the finest texture. Finally, gold was used for ornamentation in an extremely lavish manner, so that there can be little doubt that Solomon’s Temple was one of the most impressive buildings ever built. The Temple House (the Holy of Holies and the Holy Place) was set in a court and was reserved for the priests alone. In the court were the altar of holocausts and the great molten sea, together with ten layers or basins of brass for cleansing the sacrificial victims and other purifications (3 Kings 7:27-39). The Temple of Solomon stood and served as the center of the worship of God in Israel for almost 400 years, until, in 586 B.C., it was destroyed by Nabuchodonosor when he captured Jerusalem (4 Kings 25:9).

After the return of the Israelites from exile in 536 B.C., the first thought was to rebuild the Temple. The rebuilding was authorized by the Persian king, Cyrus, but construction was not actually begun until about 520 B.C. This is called the second Temple, or the Temple of Zorobabel. It was apparently built on the same site as the former Temple of Solomon, but was a less impressive structure. In this second Temple the Holy of Holies was left empty, because at the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. the Ark of the Covenant had been lost. In the Holy Place was the usual arrangement of furniture, but there was only one candlestick and one table for the loaves of proposition. This Temple remained until it was sacked by Antiochus IV (175- 174) in the year 168 B.C.

Three years later the city was retaken by Judas Machabeus and the Temple was repaired and rededicated (1 Esd. 3:1-6; 4:4; 2 Esd. 6:10; 1 Mach. 1:22-24; 4:36-59).

The Temple was thoroughly rebuilt on a magnificent scale beginning about the year 19 B.C. So thoroughgoing was the rebuilding that it was practically a new Temple, and it is therefore called the Temple of Herod the Great. In the time of Our Lord it was said to have been in process of construction 46 years (John 2:20). Work actually continued until a few years before the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 A.D., but it was carried on in such a way that it was not necessary to interrupt the Temple services during the building operations. All the references to the Temple in the New Testament are to Herod’s Temple. It was the scene of many important events in the life of Christ, beginning with His Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:22-38), when the prophecy of Malachias (Mal. 3:1) was fulfilled: “the angel of the testament, whom you desire, shall come to his temple.”

Finally, in the Bible, we have the Temple of the vision of the prophet Ezechiel. The ideal Temple of Ezechiel, interpreted as a type of the Church, is described in great detail (Ezech. 40—43), and, although it was never actually built according to the prophet’s description, it exercised much influence on the Temple of Zorobabel and that of Herod. For instance, it is in Ezechiel that we find mentioned for the first time the idea of the various courts outside the Temple House itself being served for special classes of people, e.g., for the priests, the levites, the men, the women. In Solomon’s Temple the Courts were open to all.

From the basic notion, mentioned above, that the Temple was primarily regarded as God’s house on earth, it is easy to understand the frequent metaphorical use of the word temple in the New Testament, such as when Saint Paul says that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19).

Testament. Primarily a disposition of property by will. In most of the places where the word occurs in the Bible, however, it is practically equivalent to covenant; but in the Epistle to the Hebrews the basic legal meaning of the Greek word diatheke (a last will), of which it is the translation, is insisted on, to bring out the idea that the “New Testament” is put into execution, as it were, at the death of Christ, just as a will or testament in the ordinary sense does not go into effect until the testator has died (Heb. 7:22; 9:15 if.; etc.). See Covenant. The word testament is in common use, moreover, to designate the “Old” and “New” Testaments in the Bible, as well as the two stages of providential accomplishment of salvation which they record.
